After
cleaning and repair, windows are re-assembled on ‘rubbings’
to correct overall size and shape.New lead is used that, in most cases, matches the original
profile, sometimes alloys are added to the new lead. After assembly, lead joints are
soldered.
Waterproofing
compound is applied under each lead on both sides of the window.
A final
clean up is done to remove any residue, burnish the new leads and
polish the glass.
Copper tie
wires are soldered to lead joints. They will be twisted around reinforcing bars that help support
the leaded glass.
Reinforcing
is an important part of a leaded glass window.Nearly all windows require
structural reinforcing bars to stand the test of time.
